The Massif of Aravis became a privileged spot for winter sports 100 years ago. Indeed, the first skiers went down the snowy slopes in 1907. Then, from 1945 onward, the massif got equipped with ski lifts, fitting its slopes year after year. Nowadays, the 220km of slopes and a summit peaking at 2600m have made of the Aravis the ideal play ground for champions.
Did you know that La Clusaz is the most awarded French skiing resort, with 8 world champions in nearly every skiing discipline?
Guy Perillat: double world champion in downhill skiing in 1960 and 1966
Alain Pessey: 1st world champion in speed Telemark in 1986. André Majewski: Super G snowboard world champion in 1989.
Catherine Lombard: Ski jumping world champion in 1989
Raphaëlle Monod: World champion in moguls in1989
Edgar Grospiron: triple world champion in moguls in 1989, 91 and 95
Régine Cavagnoud: Super G world champion in 2001.
Vincent Vittoz: Cross country skiing world champion in 2005.
Of course, all the young talents of La Clusaz intend to take over, not only in cross country, but also in freestyle. Pioneers in this discipline, the resort is proud to include some of the best skiers around, among which, Candide Thovex, Laurent Favre, Loïc Collon-Patton!
As for Le Grand Bornand, it distinguished itself particularly in 2006.
Roddy Darragon: Silver medal in northern ski, sprint in the winter Olympics in Turin 2006; this is the first French medal in Northern ski!
Sylvie Becaert: Bronze medal in the winter Olympics in Turin 2006 in the relay biathlon
And do not forget these names, you must have already heard about them: Sébastien Fournier-Bidoz and Steve Missillier in downhill skiing, Christophe Perillat in cross country skiing!
Besides the fact they have in common the same taste for talent and effort, all these champions have a passion for their massif: because it offers numerous possibilities of surfaces to practice on and breathtaking views. As Vincent Vittoz says: “When the sun sets on the Confins, I forget everything and I feel in total harmony with the paradise surrounding me”… www.annecy-2018.fr
